Celebrate the Small Victories

Too often in this crazy thing called life we constantly are trying to catch up up on never ending projects, worrying about things that we shouldn't be and of course trying to keep up with the Jone's. No matter what it may be, it just seems like we can never get ahead and are stressing about what is next. We need to learn to appreciate the small victories in our lives. Take a step back from the bigger picture and appreciate the little (yet, big) things that you have and have accomplished.  The victories are endless - happy to have lungs that allow you to easily breath, finishing cleaning out that dreaded closet or finally attempting that recipe you have been putting off for a while. No matter what, it is something you did! When we begin to appreciate the little things, it gives us the hope to get through those big things. Appreciate all that you got, everyday! :)

"Life is short but sweet for certain" 4/5/08

Sorry I missed last week and am a day late today. I just got home from Ireland yesterday (will write about that in the very new future!)

Three years ago today was a day that changed my life forever - Dad passed away. It seems like just yesterday he was yelling at me during a basketball game or we were watching Cardinal baseball and catching up.  I thought maybe time would help heal the pain, but I think as more time passes, it becomes more real that he will never see all the milestones in my life....marriage, children, etc. Life can come and go in the blink of an eye so always cherish the moments you have with those you love, especially your parents. Take time to visit, call and catch up because they will not always be around forever.

I miss my Dad every single day and still when I call or come home I think he is going to be there sitting at his usual spot at the table. I know he is watching down on all of us though and there is comfort in that. So today, I raise a glass (PBR was his preference) and toast to a great life of an awesome Dad, husband, uncle, brother and friend. We sure do miss you.... Everyday.

"Always be kinder than necessary because everyone you know is fighting some type of battle" - T.H. Thompson and John Watson

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time and something that I really try to live by. You never when a simple act of kindness such as holding the door for someone, asking how someone's day is going, saying please, giving a smile or even giving up your bus seat can have on another person. That person could dealing with something way more than you could have ever imagined, such as just losing a loved one, being laid off of work, having a home detroyed by fire or maybe just having a plain old bad day. One simple act of kindness could bring them a little bit of hope or comfort to know that someone else cares.  Maybe you wont get instant gratification or even a thank you, but people will know remember what you did for them, whether they ackowledged it or not. One act of kindness, EVERYDAY. Try it out! :)

Make each day count...

Many of you recall one of the most memorable movies of the 90s, The Titanic. I loved this movie (yes I saw it 4 times in theatre and had Leonardo DiCaprio hung all over my bedroom walls) but even to this day there is still a quote from that movie that sticks in my mind like glue. If you remember, Jack was speaking to the weathly people around the dinner table and they asked him what he was doing and he told them, "I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or, who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it. You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you... to make each day count."

Life really is a gift and too often we take it for granted. What we know one day could be completely changed in the blink of an eye the next. No matter what you are doing, make it count, even if it's something as simple as making breakfast each day, saying hello to a complete stranger or making just a little bit of progess on that long to-do list. Even Jack, who was sleeping under a bridge, not knowing if he would have food for dinner thought of his life as a gift. We need to remember that even the worst of situations can lead the best outcomes. So no matter how bad you think your life may be or how miserable you are at your job or whatever may be going on personally, there are so many other aspects of your life that make it worth while and MAKE IT COUNT...Everyday.

Welcome to my Blog!

Hi! I'm Katy and welcome to my blog, "Everyday Friday." Writing has always been one of my favorite past times (although very few people know that about me) so after nearly a year of thinking about blogging, I finally decided that it is time to start this thing. While there is no direct focus for this blog, it will portray my thoughts and outlook on life as well as stories about some of the amazing people I am fortunate enough to have in it. I hope that you will at least find it to be entertaining, humorous and inspiring.  Please feel free to leave feedback, comments, suggestions, topics ideas, etc. Happy reading! :)
